Intuition 101 — The Beginner's Guide
This week we’re talking all things intuition. This topic was inspired by a question one of you lovely ladies sent in. She asked:
What does it feel like to feel your intuition, and then what does following through on it actually look like?
Especially if you’re new to all of this stuff, you’re probably hearing all these gurus saying things like, '“Tap into your intuition” and “Follow your inner guidance,” but you’re like, OK… but what does that actually fucking mean?

What is your intuition?
It’s tough for me to give a hard and fast definition of what your intuition is, because to me, your intuition is more of a feeling than something you can clearly define and explain. But if I had to give a definition, I would say that your intuition is the inner voice of your higher self.
What is your higher self? Great question! Your higher self is the unlimited version of you; the part of you that’s connected to Source/God/The Universe. Your higher self sees all (past, present, and future) and is everywhere and everything. Because your higher self is omnipresent and omni-cognizant, it communicates important messages to you through the voice of your intuition.
This is why it’s SO key that you learn to recognize the guidance of your intuition and follow it without hesitation; because your intuition is always providing you with short cuts that will get you from Point A to Point B so much faster than trying to get there on your own.
What does intuitive guidance feel like?
The way you experience or receive intuitive guidance will vary from person to person. For some people, it might be a sinking feeling they get in their gut or a warm, swelling sensation near their heart.
However, internal feelings aren’t the only way you can receive messages from your intuition. The guidance could also come through lyrics in a song you’re listening to, or something you read in a book or on an Instagram post. Your intuition might have guided you to that very song or book or post in order to deliver a specific message to you!
Some people will have intuitive guidance pop up directly into their head. This is pretty common for me personally, along with receiving guidance through my physical body. These two types of intuitive messages are called “claircognizance” (clear knowing) and “clairsentience (clear feeling).
The Clair Types
If you’re curious about this topic, I encourage you to do more research into the Clair types. You can even take a test to see which type you are! For reference, here are some of the most common Clair types:
Clairvoyance — clear seeing
Claircognizance — clear knowing
Clairaudience — clear hearing
Clairsentience — clear (physical) feeling
Clairempathy — clear (emotional) feeling
Essentially, the Clairs are extra senses beyond our five “traditional” senses (touch, taste, sight, hearing, smell). You likely fall into some Clair categories moreso than others, which is where taking a test can be useful. For more information on the Clair types, I suggest checking out this blog post.
Why you *need* to follow your intuitive guidance
It’s not only important that you tune in and receive guidance from your higher self via your intuition — it’s also crucial that you follow through on the messages. The less you follow through, the more your inner voice will start faaaading into the background, getting quieter and quieter and quieter.
And it’s important to practice, especially if your someone who doesn’t quite know what your intuition sounds or feels like. Try out different methods for tuning in (which I’ll talk about below) and see which works best for you. Then simply do those things over and over again — tapping in, receiving guidance, and following through on it.
The more you practice, the more you build up your connection to your intuition and the easier it becomes for you to recognize intuitive guidance and then take the inspired action moving forward.
Plus, this guidance is always coming from your higher self, your soul — that wise, all-knowing part of you that’s always working for your higher good. So, I mean, why would you NOT want to listen to and follow through on that kind of guidance!? 😉
Looking back on my own life, I can clearly see the times where I either did or didn’t follow my intuition. I can see the short cuts that were created for me when I did listen, and I can see how things took a bad turn if I ignored that feeling in my gut and did something my intuition was warning me not to do.
Also, keep in mind that sometimes, the guidance won’t make a lot of sense to you on a conscious or rational level. You’ll question how it’s going to get you where you want to go, or how it’s related to your goals and what you want to do with your life.
But even if the guidance seems unrelated to your goals, trust me: it’s always related. Because your higher self sees all! It knows what’s coming up ahead, it knows what people, opportunities, and events can be brought into your life next, and it knows what you need in order to move forward in the quickest, most efficient way possible.
Intuition vs. ego
Next, it’s important to learn how to distinguish between the voice of your intuition and the voice of your ego. We all have both intuition and ego, and sometimes it can be tricky to tell which one of these two voices your inner guidance is coming from.
One of the easiest ways I’ve found to distinguish between the two is to remember that the voice of my intuition is always coming from a place of love, joy, and excitement — whereas the ego, since it stems more from the subconscious mind, is often fear-based or based in a sense of lack.
For example, your intuitive guidance might protect you from something bad or something that isn’t the right fit for you, whereas your ego might try to stop you from doing something simply because it’s new or different, not because it’s actually the wrong step for you. This is because to your ego, new = scary and potentially life-threatening, and the ego’s main job is to keep you safe and alive.
I’ll admit that it can be hard to distinguish between the two inner voices, so when you hear one of them sending you a message, ask yourself:
→ Is this guidance rooted in fear or a scarcity mentality (ego), OR is it rooted in excitement and joy? (intuition)
→ Am I excited to follow through on this guidance and see where it takes me (intuition), or does it feel more constrictive? (ego)
This all comes down to practice. You might not know from day one which voice is your intuition and which is your ego, but the more you practice distinguishing between the two (and analyzing the results you get when you listen to each voice), the better you’ll become at it.
Different ways to tap into your intuition
There are so many things you can do to connect to your intuition and start letting the guidance come through more freely.
A big one for me is journaling. If I’m feeling stuck on something or I don’t know the next step I should take, I’ll journal on it. I write out my fears, my goals and ambitions, and what I want in my life, and then I ask my intuition to give me ideas and point the way. Then I simply see what comes up in my writing or what pops into my head, and write it down.
Other things you can try out are:
Asking questions and then pulling oracle cards or doing a tarot spread
Meditating, making sure to go into the meditation with the intention of receiving guidance
Listening to music
By the way: You’re receiving intuitive guidance all the time, every day. This isn’t just a once-a-month thing where you sit down and journal, get the guidance, and you’re good. This is something you should be be doing daily if you want to live the happiest, healthiest, most abundant life possible.
Once you’ve received the intuitive guidance (no matter how random or illogical it might seem), just start by taking some baby steps. For example, if you feel guided to launch a new program in your business, don’t feel like you have to get everything done today so that you can launch it tomorrow.
Instead, ask your intuition: “What’s the first step I should take?” Listen for the answer, and then follow through on that. Once you’ve taken that first step, ask your intuition for the next step, and then the next step, and so on. Tapping into and following the guidance of your intuition does not have to be stressful or overwhelming unless you make it that way. Baby steps are perfect.
My 2019 Intuition Experiment
Before we wrap up, I want to share a fun little experiment I’ve been doing this year.
In January, I got this crazy idea to do an “experiment” where I committed to FULLY following my intuitive guidance for the entire year. Basically, I decided that whenever I received guidance from my intuition, I would follow through on it – no questions asked and no matter how random or unrelated the guidance seemed!
And so far, it’s been pretty crazy but also incredibly amazing. I’m using my intuition as my sole guiding force in life, and I can’t even tell you how good it feels. It’s been intense and scary at times, but I’m blown away by how aligned and in flow I feel.
Lots of wonderful synchronicities have been happening, doors have been opening, and I’m seeing my life shift in so many wonderful ways. I also just feel happier and lighter overall — like a weight’s been taken off my shoulders. I have this deep inner knowing that as long as I keep following my intuitive guidance, I’ll always be on the right path.
