4 Limiting Beliefs Stopping You From Losing Weight
99.9% of people think that losing weight is all about diet and exercise. Just eat healthier and move your body more, and you’ll lose weight!
But if that were the truth, why are there still so many people out there trying to lose weight but not reaching their goals? Why do so many people fail?
Simple: Because diet and exercise are only ONE part of the equation; they’re only one part of the truth. And not even the biggest part, at that! What is the biggest part, you ask? What’s the secret to losing weight and actually keeping it off?
The secret is what’s going on inside of you. Your thoughts, your beliefs, and your energy. Your mindset. Your vibration.
And that’s why doing the inner work is crucial if you want to lose weight. If you’ve taken my Woo-Woo Weight Loss program, you’ve likely heard me say that the inner work accounts for 80% of your results, and diet and exercise only make up 20% combined – that’s how important the mindset and energetic work is!
Today, I want to help you start doing this necessary inner work by uncovering the limiting beliefs that are holding you back from achieving your weight loss goals. Ready?
what is a limiting belief?
A limiting belief (or an “LB”, as I like to call it) is any belief that is NOT serving you and helping you achieve your goals. It’s a belief that doesn’t empower you — rather, it backs you into a corner by providing some kind of excuse as to why you can’t do something that you want to do, or why it’s super hard for you to do that thing.
As an example, a limiting belief around weight loss might be something like, “Losing weight is super hard.” And a more empowering belief would be something along the lines of, “Losing weight is easy and effortless for me.”
See how one supports your goals and one doesn’t? That’s the difference between a limiting belief and an empowering one.
where do limiting beliefs come from?
A lot of your LBs were ingrained in you when you were a kid (back when your mind was a lot more impressionable). They can arise from things like:
What your parents said or told you when you were a kid
What you heard other “authority” figures in your life say (grandparents, older siblings, teachers, doctors, etc.)
What you heard on TV shows or in movies
What you read in books or learned at school
how do limiting beliefs affect your weight?
Your limiting beliefs influence just about everything that you do. Although you aren’t always consciously aware of them, they’re often the guiding force behind the actions you take, the choices you make, and how you experience reality.
For instance, if you have a deeply held belief that losing weight is hard, what type of reality do you think you’re creating and experiencing? One where it’s hard for you to lose weight! And then, via the Law of Attraction, you draw more experiences and “evidence” into your life that supports this belief, reinforcing it further and engraining the neural pathway deeper and deeper.
But what if, instead, you could instill the belief that losing weight was easy? That it could be fun? That it didn’t have to involve slaving away in a gym and giving up all of your favorite foods?
Good news, babe: You can! And that’s exactly what we’re going to do today.
First, I’m going to share 4 of the biggest limiting beliefs I see come up time and time again around weight loss — both in my own life, my friends’ and family’s lives, and in my students’ — and then we’ll talk about two different techniques for overcoming them.
4 limiting beliefs stopping you from losing weight
Read them below and see if any of them ring a bell!
LB #1. Losing weight is hard.
I’ve mentioned this one several times already but only because it really is one of the biggest and most prevalent LBs out there. I mean, have you ever heard someone say that losing weight was easy for them? Probably not!
LB #2. Diet and exercise are all that matter.
This one is also huge. And where did we learn this belief from? Um, how about every-fricken-where!? Doctors, weight loss coaches, movies, TV shows (think The Biggest Loser), etc. etc. etc.
LB #3. When people lose weight, they always gain it back.
Maybe you read an article that said this and stated it as “fact”. Or maybe you knew a few people who lost weight but then put it back on. If so, you might have developed the belief that weight loss is never permanent. And if you do have this belief, you might also think, “Well, why bother trying then?”
LB #4. Being overweight is genetic and unavoidable for me.
This one might have you scratching your head a bit. Like, of course weight can be genetic, Krista. Science has proven it!
But let me ask you this: If you have a deeply held belief that you’re overweight simply because of the family you were born into, where does that put the onus? It shifts it OFF of you and onto something else, right?
But, but, BUT – we know that we’re all 100% responsible for creating our own destinies and realities. We are powerful creators, and that means creating our bodies, too! If you believe you’re genetically destined to be overweight forever, that’s the reality you’re going to create and experience.
So ask yourself: Is that the reality I want? Or is there a different belief I can adopt that would serve me so much better? (I’d go with the latter!)
So gorg, did any of those 4 LBs resonate with you? I thought they might! Now, let’s unpack how you’re going to overcome them so you can stop sabotaging your weight loss journey and start getting RESULTS. 🙌
how to replace your limiting beliefs
Step #1. Find the exception
If you want to eliminate a limiting belief, you can start by poking holes in it to prove to yourself that it’s not true. You do this by looking at the LB from all different angles and asking yourself, “Is this really true in all cases?”
Tony Robbins uses the analogy of a limiting belief being like a table, and when you start finding exceptions to the belief, you start kicking off the legs holding the table up. Once you’ve kicked off 3 or 4 of the legs, the table (belief) can no longer stand.
Let’s work through a quick example. Say one of your limiting beliefs is that when people lose weight, they always gain it right back. All you have to do to start kicking off some of those legs is dig around online or find people in your personal life who have lost weight but haven’t gained it back.

Yep, it really CAN be that easy!
Step #2. Use positive affirmations
Affirmations are empowering, positive statements made in the present tense, and they’re a fantastic way to instill new beliefs in your subconscious mind. Repetition is the key to making affirmations work. If you say your affirmations out loud over and over again, they eventually start to seep into your subconscious where they can begin rewriting and replacing your limiting beliefs.
Here are a few of my own favorite affirmations for weight loss:
“It is safe for me to lose weight with ease.”
“It is safe for my body to look and feel different than it does now.”
“Being thin and healthy is my birth right.”
